An exceptionally well made imitation
Lot 2929
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Silvered bronze, 19 mm, 2.90 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate. Irregular mint, after 320. CONSTΛNTINVS ΛVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. D N CONSTΛNTINI MΛX ΛVG / PΛR around wreath containing VOT / XX in two lines. Cf. RIC 252 (for possible prototype). Slightly rough and with very light doubling on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this exceptionally attractive coin is unofficial, indicating it is an extremely well-made contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. The laurel wreath resembles a pearl diadem similar to some emissions from Heraclea and Cyzikus but never seen in western mints. It may imitate Arles RIC 252 or represent a free invention.
